In past versions of Pages It has been rather easy to insert an image into the footer. But with the new version that accompanies Mavericks for free it seems to not allow you to drag and drop, copy and paste or insert.
How can this be done?

I'm sorry, but you can't do that anymore. One of many, many features missing.
If you want to continue getting work done, Pages 4.3 should still be in an iWorks folder within your Applications folder.
Please remember to tell Apple what we need from them at:
... and it appears that if you open a previous Pages document into the new 5.0 version AND had images in the header or footer, you can't remove them!
Hard to imagine why this feature was hosed up!
Ability to place images in footer is gone. Wow! Also can't change text in footer of previous docs. Currently rebuilding document between Pages crashes. Running the most recent version. Dreadful.
Just one of over 90+ features removed by Apple in Pages 5.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Trash/archive Pages 5 after Exporting all your files back to Pages '09, then rate review it in the App Store.

I did find I was able to select footers when I went to (at the top) Arrange > Section Masters > Make Master Objects Selectable.
Then that was not a Footer.

But it does work the same way pretty much.
I found: http://help.apple.com/pages/mac/5.2/#/tan9fdc65243 was helfpul.
Insert an image. Position on the page where you want it (in this case, in the footer area), and then Arrange > Section Masters > Move Object to Section Master (from the Arrange menu at the top of your computer screen).
I think this does the exact same thing as the insert into footer. It accomplished what I wanted anyway . . . to but a logo in the footer on each page.

Not "the exact same thing".
It is just a Master Object, stuck somewhere on the page, which you can position near the Footer text if you like.

Wow - that's incredibly clunky. I agree with Peter...it's duct tape at best...Very weird you cannot insert images into a footer.
Thanks for sharing your solution yxutraveller. It was most helpful, and I would argue more flexible than inserting images specifically into a footer. Just adjust the margins and Bob's your uncle!
Not being able to do something is not "flexibility".
You were always able to "flexibly" stick master objects anywhere on the page, just now in Pages 5.x you can't do what many would like to do, but were able to in Pages '09, which is stick a graphic in the Header/Footer. Something that is possible in every other Mac software I can think of.

Not a matter of "winning".
The question was how do you insert an image in a Footer.
You actually can now do that now in Pages 5.6.1. But still can't insert a Table. Both are useful functions.
So xyutravellers' suggestion is redundant.

By the way, this post was very helpful to me. I was looking at how to customize a footer and this post provided a solution.
And by the way, PeterBreis0807 you always seems so bitter about Pages 5 in this forum. There are certainly things we'd all like to see in Pages 5, but I think sometimes your bitterness keeps you from having helpful answers.
Pages 5 is a massive stuff up.
The worst part is just how incompatible it is, just on Macs.
That's just the way it is and I don't gloss over it. "Duct tape" or no duct tape.
Just read the reviews in the App Store.
